Bnai Zion Medical Center is Building a Bomb-Proof Hospital Emergency Shelter
Bnai Zion Medical Center is known for the excellence it offers to citizens living in northern Israel, many of whom are unable to financially cover their medical expenses. The much-needed services it provides include thousands of life-saving surgeries and rehabilitation programs. It is also known as the number one neonatal care unit in the country. So, what makes the Bnai Zion Medical Center different from others around the world? All hospitals are outfitted with an Emergency Room, but for this medical center in war-torn Haifa, ‘emergency’ can take on a very different meaning.
The critical care provided by doctors and nurses to keep patients alive requires intense focus. Can you imagine the added strain that comes from living in what, at any moment could erupt into a war zone? Already, the hospital’s emergency room treats over 65,000 visitors each year. Some of these men, women and children are victims of terrorist attacks such as bus bombings and randomized pedestrian violence. But on top of this pressing need, the facility must prepare, as best it can, for the unthinkable: a terrorist attack aimed directly at the hospital itself.
